And, during these warmer months, your jewelry is prone to coming in contact with an array of substances that can seriously dull their shine - from pool chemicals, to saltwater, to sunscreen… the list goes on. While properly caring for your jewelry may not be at the top of your priority list this summer, there are a few tips you should follow to ensure your jewels stay in tip-top shape through the sunny season and beyond.

The main reason why you shouldn't wear your jewels in the waves is simple - you have a high risk of losing them (and this happens way more often than not!). Salt water can also be harsh and break down components of gold over time, so this can speed up the wear and tear on your pieces significantly. When it comes to pools, it’s also best to avoid it altogether. Although you have less of a chance of losing them due to a more “controlled environment” in comparison to the ocean, pool chemicals like chlorine can actually break down alloys in gold (no thanks!).
If taking off your wedding ring gives you separation anxiety (we get it), the best thing to do is have it insured. Although best practice is to take it off during activities that can lead to damage (such as cleaning, swimming, or working out), insuring your jewelry with a good repair policy will keep you covered. This also applies to those that like to bring their jewelry on their summer escapades. Just remember… no two natural stones are exactly alike, which means you won’t be able to get the same exact one twice should something happen.
Invest in a trusted travel case or box to protect your pieces from knocking around while not in use, which could cause scratches or even result in a loose stone. Packing important jewelry in a checked bag is also a no-no.
Let’s start with harder gemstones, which include diamonds and sapphires. The best at home cleaning method for these durable stones is simple and you probably already have these items on hand. Use a soft bristled toothbrush (a kid’s one works great) and gently scrub your pieces with warm water and a dash of blue Dawn dish soap. If the piece is older or hasn't been touched in a while, make sure to do this cautiously over a bowl or enclosed space. Why? Oftentimes, dirt and other particles will hold a stone in place so cleaning can cause the stone to become loose or even fall out.
When it comes to delicate stones (opal, emerald, topaz, moonstone, tourmaline, sunstone and onyx), cleaning them with warm soapy water and a soft cloth will do the trick. Make sure to avoid vigorous scrubbing and ultrasonic cleaners with these gentle beauties.
Pearls (aka our go-to summer accessory) will need to be treated most delicately of all. They should be wiped with a soft cloth after a long day of wear, and can occasionally be cleaned with warm soapy water. Don’t forget to apply your perfume, sunscreen, and hairspray before styling your pearls.
